Struts & Carbs 82 400 NEW MEMBER

Postby Vegas1982Kconv » Sun Apr 26, 2009 12:35 am

I’m a new member and looking forward to upcoming events, I just bought a garage kept 1982 Dodge 400 conv. near mint with 32K mi. on it SWEET!
Here are the two things it needs.
1) THE CARB. When I start it cold the idle is a little high (normal) in about 5 min. it lowers and is very rough with some dying, but on the road it runs great with the foot on the gas….ANY HELP??? And if so where can I buy parts for this carb.
2) The suspension is near shot… any good places to shop for struts? And what brand to use? Should I replace the springs with only 32K?

OH..one last thing, what octane should I use with the 2.6?

Thanks for all your help and hope to see you soon.

Brian, from Las Vegas.

I would say tune the idler screw. This should help the idle mixture. Stop the "chugging" at stop lights.

Hit up Ebay for shocks. Replace shocks after 7-8 years.

Hello!!
My name is Bob R.....and I also have the 1982 dodge 400 2.2L convertible.....I just joined today...however if you are still having trouble with the carb try the following...from the front of the car look for a quite large hex shaped screw adjuster on the right side of the carb follow the screw down to where it meets the electrical contacts....open carb slowley to find contacts...clean carefully...this will allow the A/C high Idle to work...with the A/C on and engine warmed up turn the big screw to the left to lower RPM's to be where you would like....turn off the A/C and with foot on brake put car in gear see if the Idiot light comes on ....if it does turn big screw to the right 1/4 turn and try again.......this should fix most of your Idel troubles....If for some reason with car in gear say at a light and every few seconda or a minute the engine misses/lopes....put a can of "Sea Foam" [most Wall-Mart's] in the gas tank....it will clean the carb and all the gunk in the top half of the engine and valve train with no harm to any thing....drive normaly and after 15 minutes you will think ya got a a 2.6L with a blower DON'T PUSH IT!!!! ....let the stuff do it's thing......Oh yea the gas.....if you are like me you are going for the cheep stuff...I found out with all this ethonal it puts a build up on everything...I switched to Shell 87 octane and all the lopeing and missing and water went away....Good luck...

I have an 82 , I am switching my 2.6 carb'd engine with an 86 Reliant 2.2 Fuel Injected. In the car currently though I use the ceapest regular unleaded and have never had a problem. My carb was rebuilt last year, they are a complicated carb. Good luck!

im with ya there, the carbs are crappy, and a good idea with the fuel injected 2.2, a carbed 2.2 will swap right in, if a carbed 2.2 is tuned right it will run just like fuel injection.
