How Quiet is your 2.2/2.5

Postby 88 aries » Fri Apr 09, 2010 3:19 am

Just wondering on how quiet some of your engines are, my 2.2 barely has any wrist pin knock while the 2.5 has lots of valve noise and wrist pin knock

I wish mine didn't have that tapping sound I now hear when driving, especially going uphill. Can't hear it when parked or idling. Maybe its something simple that just needs to be adjusted. No rod knock
and no oil burn. Sounds like a loose rattly tap. No smoking. Ugh. This became noticeable 4 months ago. I refuse to believe my engine is done for as it only has 151,000 miles and had the headgasket
done twice. Hope its something simple and not fatal.

My 1986 Lebaron 2.5 is quiet (I think) w/92,000

The 1988 Aries 2.5 is a little noisey at start up but soon quiets down w/96,000 on it now.

The 2.2 liter K engine has always seemed quieter to me than the 2.5l engine in Acclaims/Spirits.

My 2.5 is very quiet, Guy has driven it and can tell you that it's like a smal luxury car!

Mine had a #4 rod knock when I got it.Rebuilt rods and new pistons took that away.
And for some reason,a warm restart will result in a smoother, quieter, lower idling engine than the same engine on 1 start.Dont know why,but it runs sooooo smooth when restarted...

My first 85 2.2 was fairly quiet. My 86 Turbo had loud wrist pin noise. My 2.6 is quiet. I just got 83 2.2 but have not taken delivery yet (more on that later.) I have yet to own a 2.5.

Since I've had it, It seems loud to everyone. I often hear "you gotta fix that exhaust" but last year I put in a new Doughnut to Muffler (cat included) system in and it made no difference. The loudness seems to be coming from under the engine, but not at the doughnut . Here's a question. Is there a lower exhaust mainfold gasket that may have disintegrated?

What year is it? Maybe your EGR tube is rusted and leaking exhaust.
