One more random K car picture from 1981

Postby 1of10K » Mon Jan 10, 2011 3:54 am

Just another random picture with K cars from 1981. Both of the k cars were new at the time, the tan one was mine, the yellow one was my fathers.

My 1974 Lincoln MKIV got 7 miles per gallon... on a good day...! The '66 VW got 20 mpg, K cars beat them both

Thanks for the photo. It's wonderful going back to that simpler time. I wish people would get out of this "Big ,Bloated, Sherman Tank" menality there in. Maybe the quickly rising gas prices will get us all back on track.

I wish we lived in a world where every car from every era populated the road and everything was findable. There are definitely more of those 73 Lincoln Coupes, like the one in
the photo left, than 81Ks today. My boss has one. If I could afford it, I would drive a 12mpg car everyday. 8) I mean, why can't there be more old cars. I was born April 14,1981
by the way.

Yes, that was the 4-speed bench seat wagon. The picture was taken in the small town of Lovington New Mexico, a great place.

That '74 Lincoln was one of my most favorite cars I ever had. It rode like no other car, pure quality and class. But you could actually watch the gas gauge ( the only gauge ) quickly drop while you were driving it, just a little too pricey to drive all the time, even back in 1981 when gas was 89 cents per gallon.

Back in 1981, most people out there drove to the Texas state line to buy gas, as it was alot cheaper there than on the NM side. At the line, in the middle of the "desert", there were no homes for many miles around, just a cluster of gas stations and fireworks stands perched on the Texas side of the state line.

I know what you mean by watching the gas gauge. I had a 61 Lincoln with a big 430 C.I. engine. You can see the gas gauge needle move.
But that was my favorite car of all time. I wish I still had it. A great car.

I am driving a 1979 Ford Ranchero right now with a 351 engine and cleveland heads, EVERY DAY. It cost me $40 to drive only 115 miles on Saturday. The needle noticeably drops while
driving. Great car, but the gas mileage is killing me right now. I think it might be getting 8mpg.

the last brand new car my parents ever bought was an 81 aries wagon w/ 4spd and bench seat. in fall of '88 it moved to 2nd car status when they picked up an 86 aries wagon le. the 86 was a luxo car with cloth interior, dual mirrors w/ remote control, tilt wheel, rear wiper, 2.5 engine, and the flip down map light was cool also. that car became my first car in spring '97 when i got my licence and now it is my resto-mod project. i'm driving what was the next primary family car, a 97 merc sable wagon picked up in 98 that gets 30+mpg and legally seats 8 in a pinch. my parents gave it to me when they got an 01 taurus wagon. my dad also has had 4 suburbans...a 72, 84, 87, and 99 (all 2wd).

it is still fun to think back to 1990-91 when we had the 81 and 86 k wagons and the 72 and 84 burbs.....technically 4 wagons in the household (no stinkin sedans!!!). in addition to the 86 k and the 97 merc i have picked up a 72 burb and so i technically have 3 wagons and one mini pickup 87 ram 50.
