I was getting 20-22 with my 86 coupe in the winter. Wife is getting 24-25 with it now that it warmed up and gas is better. My convertible is in the 18 range. We'll see what the 5 speed wagon does next week.
Some do better than others. I've never done better than 25 consistently on any of my 2.2 cars including an 89 horizon and a 93 sundance. I don't go easy on anything. If I need to get to 65 to merge I do, I'm not afraid to floor it when I have to.

Maybe the fuel blend is better in your area. Can you still buy gasoline without alcohol? Everthing in this part of the country includes Ethanol which reduces MPG a little. However, you seem to have the reverse of what I see. My 83 2.2 carb Reliant typcially gets over 30 MPG in the summer. The fuel injected cars 2.5 liter cars (Acclaims/Spirtits) with automatics typically get about 27 MPG in the summer and the manual one gets maybe one or two MPG better. My 3.3 l New Yorker V6 typically gets 25MPG. I agree 22 MPG seems rather low for a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder unless maybe it is used mostly for very short trips and in a lot of stop and go traffic with the A/C on.

I never seem to do better than 25-26 now. I once got a record of 30 going slightly downhill for 100 miles. Also, California likes to put a lot ETHANOL in gas tanks to reduce gas mileage and it increases wear and tear. Also, I tend to drive over 65 a lot. I have also done as poorly as 20.

we do have non ethanol fuel, I get it at quik trip all the time, up here in wisconsin we dont care about emissions or crap. or could it be that I just got finely tuned engines to perfection. my cars dont have any code problems or anything.

Mine don't have code problems and are tuned up as well. My 93 sundance only had 62K miles on it too. Still didn't top 25MPG on average.

Back in 1981, I was only getting 23-25 at the best on the highway at 55-60 MPH with a brand new K car 2.2 with automatic.
I remember the car was sold as supposedly being able to get much better mileage, under the "old style" epa rules for figuring those things.

My 86 Aries get a dismal 16 mpg of course computer issues and such seem to plague my car, also figuring i need a new o2 sensor even though that's the one code I haven't got.

At 16 MPG - you have too be running way too rich and you Cat is propably dead in addition to your O2 sensor. Fix your known fault codes problems and check emission levels on an analyzer as a starting point.
