air conditoning 2.2/ 2.5------------------2.6

Postby 88 aries » Tue Jun 07, 2011 4:32 am

Just wondering, how many of you have working air conditoning in your K-cars? all of mine work great, even the 81 with its original compressor, we had to install a condensor on the 81 Reliant as the old one was leaking really bad, for being a 30 year old compressor it does a excellent job of keeping the car cooled down, I had it on a couple days ago just to limber the compressor up. I ordered a decal that says, air temp, chrysler corporation.. top quality right there. but ya its 98 degrees here and hot as hell.

The one on my 83 2.2 l no longer works. I think it needs a new compressor. When, it did work it seemed inadequate in comparison to the A/C installed on my older Chrysler product cars. But if you say your 81 seems very good, mine probably needed attention even when it did work. (Maybe it needed a new receiver drier.) My 88 2.2l was originally a Maine car and does not have A/C. My later Mopars with 2.5 l and 3.3 liter A/Cs are adequate, but still do not seem to compare to the old A/C systems from the 70's.

Still using R-12 in all your cars? It works better than R-134.

All my air is working,(2.2-2.6-2.2turbo). All have been converted to R-134. The 3.3 Caravan works great! Chrysler put their largest compressor in those.

My 86 Reliant doesn't have A/C. Adding A/C is way down on the list of car projects. My 84 Aries wagon, which i no longer have, had factory A/C. Over 203 K miles it went through a compressor and was on it's third condensor. The first aluminum condensor started leaking after only two years. Being a new car I replaced it with a new Mopar factory part, that one lasted another two years. The third was an aftermarket Modine and it went the rest of the car's life. My wife had a 92 Daytona, it too lost its orininal aluminum condensor in three years I replaced it with another Modine and it too went the life of the car. The compressor on the 84 Aries blew its shaft seal at 130k miles. The A/C always seemed to be struggling to cool the wagon and seemed to be undersized for all the interior space. The system in my 71 Charger could and still can freeze you right out of the car.

my 85 and 86 aries both have working air the 86 was converted to r134 and while it works it takes for ever to get the car cooled down. the 85 still has the factory original r-12 charge in it and will literally freeze you out of the car.
