My 1993 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue 'EEK'

Postby sideburns2009 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 5:39 am

I just bought a 1993 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue that was my grandpa's. It's an EEK or Extended K-Car. The car was maintained at the local Chrysler Dealership for most of it's life, then by my uncle for the past couple of years. It was garage kept and the paint and the vinyl top are in perfect condition. It has 107,000 miles on it and the 3.8L V6/41TE combination, self-leveling rear suspension and the dreaded Bendix 10 brake system that is beginning to fail again after being repaired in 1998 under Recall 685. The dealer is going to evaluate the system and see if the Recall will be covered again. It's in mint condition for the most part and has the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. The front struts are SHOT, and I mean S.H.O.T. and I have new Monroe Quick-Struts coming Friday since I've had good luck with them on other Chrysler's. The exterior looks are growing on me, finally, but the car is a classic, and can't beat it for the price.

Welcome. Great car! I drive a 93 Chyrsler Salon with 3.3 liter. The best of the Chysler K-car derivatives.

A couple more 91-93 Chrysler's in my family.

Thanks! It's a classy little car. :D I'm waiting on UPS to deliver my new struts for this thing. The rear air suspension holds up fine but the front struts. Man...

My struts were replaced awhile back. The rear air suspension self-leveling shocks usually goes bad eventually on most of them, but you can replace it with standard shocks if need be. Did your car come with special mirror option with the light sensor for automaticlly sensing and controlling when to turn the headlights on/off and setting selecting delay times. How about the seat memory option for storing multiple seat position settings for different drivers? Chrysler seemed to drop the seat memory option (one of its nicest features) on the next series of high end models (94-97 LHS).

Nice car but as a 20 year old I wouldn't want to own a C body as they are known for a crappy transmission's and the hateful mitsubishi 3.0 V6, you are lucky to have the 3.8, but in the end the Turbo 2.2 is still my weapon of choice.

You are right about the transmission being problematic. Chrysler had lots and lots of problems with it originally and had numerous upgrades/improvements over the years including new software, but the 93 has a better one than the earlier ones. Most of these transmissions don't make it to 100,000 miles initially. But if its rebuilt properly it can last a very long time. In addition, its an overdrive so that you can get very good MPG. 89-90's had the Mitishbishi 3.0. 91-93s had either the 3.3l or 3.8l American engines both which are both considered very good engines.

Got the struts installed today. Took about 20 minutes per side with the Monroe Quick-Struts. Rides like new! The self-leveling rear suspension still works perfectly. The shocks may have been replaced at one point, I don't know. It has the power antenna, self-closing trunk, auto-headlight mirror with auto dimming, 2 person memory seats, and heated mirrors. The transmission had a complete rebuild performed by Coleman Taylor transmissions about 20k miles ago, and I just 'flushed' out their fluid (via cooler line and warm transmission) and filled it with ATF+4, as well as dropping the pan and changing the filter. The shifts were smooth to begin with but this improved them. Gotta have ATF+4 in my 41TE.

I wouldn't have bought it if it had the 3.0 in it. No dropped valve seats for me. The New Yorker Fifth Avenue never got the 3.0 anyway. The tranny was rebuilt and I'll be taking care of it. They aren't THAT bad. I've had several (5) (one being an early 1991 model) A604/41TE's and only 2 have been rebuilt. The others made it to 156k miles, 160k miles, and 284k miles and were still going strong.

Yeah, I had an 89 Dodge Dynasty with which I got stuck with those first engines and transmissions. The 3.0 engine had to have new heads before 60,000 miles and the transmission had to be rebuilt around the same time. Fortunately, Chrysler had the 7/70 warranty in place when I bought the car, so most of it was covered under the warranty, but that car was a real lemon. Finally donated it and had it towed away after the computer fried and I didn't want to put any more money into the thing. Hopefully, the later models, like yours, did better. On the plus side, compared to my 1983 Chrysler E-Class, the Dynasty was bigger and more comfortable and still got better gas mileage with the 3.0 V-6 than with the 4 banger the E-Class had.

Those three speeds were not the most efficient trannys. The four speeds were continually tweaked until they became pretty reliable. Everyone had early troubles with their four speeds. My 87 Taurus went through two rebuilds before 100k.Chrysler addressed the problem quicker than Ford.
