PTU Selenoid.......Code 37.

Postby NJxxJon » Thu Jun 11, 2009 1:31 am

Getting Code 37....is the PTU selenoid on the top or bottom of my reliant wagon? Is it the box where all the Vacuum Lines go? ....I just re-did the vacuum lines with a small soft rubber (Versus the old hard rubber) ...would this be whats messing this up?

The soft vacuum lines can collapse under the vacuum produced closing off the line and thats why they were made of hard rubber.

The code is for the torque convertor, the diagnosis on Minimopar for the code is incorrect. The selinoid is inside the transmission. The shift lever itself can be out of adjustment causing the code. Loosen the cable bracket and adj it to make sure it's in the park position at both ends.

Ah, my shift lever is out of place - I know this.....this bracet should be behind the Tranmission then? Thanks Butch

Why is there so much WRONG info out there on these K-cars?????????????

Its driving me NUTS!!

Butch you say code 37 is for the torque converter????
And I am NOT saying you are wrong at all!

I am trying to learn this stuff with codes and all, and the minimopar site and Allpar site both say that the code 37 is for:
2.2 and 2.5 engine
Chrysler Fault Code 37: baro-read solenoid open or shorted.
•For turbocharged engines, code 37 will be triggered when the baro-read solenoid circuit is open or shorted.
•For normally aspirated (non turbo) engines with automatic transmissions, code 37 will be triggered when the Part Throttle Unlock (PTU) solenoid circuit is open or shorted.
•For normally aspirated cars with manual transmissions, code 37 is sometimes set for no apparent reason.
This is detected when the ECU doesn’t sense near 0vdc or 12vdc at the relay when the solenoid is turned on or off. When code 37 is thrown the power limited light will not be lit and the system will not enter limp mode.
Possible Reasons for Fault Code 37
Poor wiring or connection - Read the page ‘How to troubleshoot drivability issues’. Check the wiring and connections from the logic module to the solenoid. Clean and re-grease the connectors with dielectric grease.
Defective solenoid - The solenoid is located in the right, front fender next to one to three other solenoids. See the Understanding Solenoids page for information about how to test and repair solenoids.
Sometimes, a code 37 will be stored on manual-transmission cars, and the Upshift indicator lamp will light, even in 5th gear. This is a random fault in the ECU, apparently harmless, and can be ignored

I need to get my ass somewhere and get me a book with the proper codes for Chrysler K-cars 1981-1989.

Gonna order a Haynes Repair for k-cars 1981 thru 1989!

The trouble codes are listed in the Hanes Repair Manual for Dodge Aires and Plymouth Reliant 1981
thru 1989 manual #723 on page 320.

I have a Chrysler ECU training manual which seems to be rare since I can't find another one in better shape. There's much more info in this than is on the web or in aftermarket books. I only know about this code 37 problem because the club "prez" has the same code in his car. On a manual car, a computer calibrated for an auto would set the code since there's no soleniod to sw. the voltage reading.

Check your grounds at the Logic Module 89Aries...I have seen it trip the code with a rusty corroded ground.
