13in to 14in wheels

Postby reliant84 » Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:10 pm

I've been having trouble finding 13in tires in my area. I have an 84 Reliant. Can I change the 13in wheels to 14in from an 86 and up K car? Two different tire stores told me that they are soon not going to sell 13in tires but they sell many 14in tires. Thoughts?

I suspect you could changoever as long as you don't mind the speedometer offset. However, I think the 14 Reliant wheels have the 5 lug hub. But there are other 14" Mopar wheels with the same 4 lug pattern hub and same width that will probably work (slighlty rim width width might also work ok since 14' wheel K cars have the wider rim). See link below.

Thanks for the link K-Car Wagon! Now when it gets warmer, I have a reason to go to the junk yard.

I've switched my wagon and coupe from 13 to 14 because I had a ton of 14" tires/rims.

Car-part.com will help locate 4 lug 14" rims nearby, seems like there are a lot showing on there. 14" wheels from all 85 and back (4 lug) Chrysler FWD cars/vans should work so don't limit yourself to just looking for a reliant. If you get the correct size 14'" tires the speedometer will read correctly. 175-80 13 and 185-70 14 are basically the same as far as the car knows. This tire size calculator is handy for checking how good a match tires are: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html Also don't forget to find some 14" hubcaps. A set shouldn't be hard to come by and there are lots of options if you don't mind having newer ones on it.

Thanks everyone. On the other hand, the standard tire on the car is 175/80/13 but can I run a 175/70/13? Tire retailers here in PA sell a few of those tires. Thoughts?

slightly smaller, your speedo will read about 5 MPH low. May also hurt gas mileage a bit since your RPMs will be up a bit higher. Might be close enough to not make any difference. Usually it's Ok to go a size bigger, not a size lower.

thanks DodgeDip. I may go to the 175/70/13 tire just since it's winter but now you have my thinking about the spedometer and the rpm. this is going to me my daily driver and it does go on the interstate.

Then in doubt, go larger. I'd go with the 14" rims if this car is a daily driver.

ditch those dinky little wheels AND go to 5 lug rims at the same time. i actually think 14's a little small, but they will allow you to run 10-1/4" brake rotors from a sportier model or early caravan.
my 91 dynasty had stronger brakes than my 86 K wagon....until i upgrade to 11" Spirit r/t brakes on all 4 corners. there is no such thing as too much braking, especially on the front and bigger rims will allow the air to get in there better too.

and if you want the speedo to be correct, keep the tire diameter the same by selecting the right size. a 185/70-14 (stock on my wagon) will swap with a 195/60-15 and a 205/50-16 (the size i will be running on my car). a lower profile tire will make for a better handing car. going from a 205/75-14 to a 205/70-15 on my 89 Lesabre made a world of difference and the speedo was spot on.
