new car - dodge 600

Postby kittypiller » Tue May 14, 2013 8:49 pm

Hello, I just bought a 86 dodge 600 convertable yesterday and have noticed it seems to be running rich, it smokes some when started and has a strong fuel smell, any ideas??

Have you taken a look in the radiator? What condition is the coolant in?
Not that I have had (yet) any problems with the Reliant cooling system - I do know from past experience that a car of this age may have a lot of cooling system build up... rust, scale, old attempts at a quick fix with "stop leak". If (when totally cool) you remove the cap and notice anything other than clean antifreeze - you may try doing a cooling system flush.
One other thing to look at..... are the heater hoses hooked up? Sometimes on older cars , a previous owner may have "fixed" a leaky heater core via a bypass of the core itself.

Have a good one! From one "New Guy" to another.

Its a 2.2l, tbi engine. No super snail on it lol
We'll look at the cooling system for bubbles, when we do a flush and fill to put antifreeze back in it.
Is there a valve that shuts flow off to the heater?

As for the smoke, its black, sooty, and reeks of gas, BAD. We looked down the throttle body, and the injector is just dribbling constantly. Gas is puddling on the blade. No doubt its running way too rich. It runs good once it warms up tho. Im going to put some fuel system restore in it and hopefully it will clean the injectors and it will work properly.
