2.2 to Replace 2.6 in Caravan

Hello! I'm a new member looking for any assistance regarding replacing the 2.6 engines in two Caravans I have with the 2.2 engine. I know I have to replace the transmission as well and install the necessary logic modules. I want to make sure I am taking everything from the donor vehicles.

I have a 1987 w/ the 2.6 and an 86 with the same engine and trans. I understand the 2.2 was also in the Omni and Horizon as late as 1988.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Ummm.....1986 and newer should be a 2.5 which is a stroker version of the dodge 2.2. the 2.6 is a Mitsubishi design and has a different bell housing pattern, but the 2.2 and 2.5 is a shared design. the 2.6 only came in the early 80's Chrysler products and ran a carburetor. the 2.5 replaced the 2.6 and everything from a 2.2 will bolt on. if either of your cars has a 2.6, then some IDIOT went to an awful lot of trouble of putting that piss pot in there!

i would stick with a 2.5 in a heavier car since it has more torque, otherwise the 2.2 is a good choice.

also, the 2.6 is a thirsty engine, due to it's larger pistons. the 2.5 has a super long stroke with 2.2 pistons, so it makes as much power, but far more efficiently.

Hello: The 2.2 was available in the Voyager and Caravan in 1986 and 1987, either with a 4 or a 5 bolt drive pulley.

Converting from a 2.6 to a FI 2.5 is a hassle. Changing wiring harness and gas tank and much more. Just want to get these cars running. I have people all the time coming to my house, asking to buy them so they can send them to the scrapper. They are too nice to junk.

I can run a 2.5 with a intake and carb from a 2.2 with the least hassle. This stuff is getting hard to find. If you see anything in your area, let me know. Thanks for your reply.

Caravan's didn't gain fuel injection until the 87 1/2 model year. As for swapping in the 2.2L, you'll need the underhood harness as well as the complete drivetrain, spark computer, and so forth. Your already carb'ed fuel tank will be fine for the application and the exhaust should work just fine too.

2.5 carb sounds like a great idea. 86-88 2.5 will have the hole for the mechanical fuel pump (1989+ common block 2.2 and 2.5's don't have the hole). the bigger engine is the way to go if you plan to keep the van, otherwise do whatever is cheapest to get it running.
