Tranny pinion gear Yellow 19 teeth.

Postby aussiewoody » Sat Oct 29, 2016 7:57 am

Gday all,

My friend here in Australia has a K car (like me) hers is a '85 New Yorker 2.6
She is looking for a tranny gear as her's is chewed out.

She doesn't get onto the computer much so I have been looking for her.
I bought some from ebay (USA) which were supposed to be 19 tooth yellow, but when they arrived they were actually more of a green colour and they were just slightly different to hers. She tried one but no better.

SO, my question is, short of jumping on a plane, flying to USA mainland, finding a K car in a wreckers and removing a (hopefully) good pinion ... can someone suggest where we could buy a new or used one please?

All help or advice gratefully appreciated.

Regards
Gary

Hi
First off thank you for your kind comments on your other posting.... I try to help as these poor K cars get no respect....
The trans in that New Yorker is an A-470 which is the Torqueflite Auto for the 2.6 mitsu. For "hard" parts try these guys:http://www.nwtparts.com/ I've had very good service from them....
To do a firm identification on that trans, check the trans part number and serial number on the case pan rail to the left lower when facing the rear gear cover. My parts book for '85 does not show the 19 tooth pinion being used only the 20 and 21 tooth.
But Chrysler wasn't perfect by any means!
We always used to order rebuild parts using the case part number and serial as year to year changes were common, the years from '82 to '86 were just nuts...

Again my apologies for being months behind with posting.
But thanks again for your interest and help.

In a nutshell YES.
I have actually tracked down and bought 3 - however my friend is still having issues, and we are thinking that it may be because there is a clip that holds the speed sensor in, and maybe it isn't holding the pinion in place correctly.
The issue is that the digital dash speedo readings are jumping all over the place and not holding a steady reading.

We won't know if that hunch is correct until she gets it checked by her mechanic.

SO YES, we have the part (and a couple of spares but the problem is not as yet rectified for her - the wheel turns slowly.

Thanks again
Gary
