Man, what are those two nice K-cars doing out in the snow! When will people realize 80s cars need to be respected and preserved.

Sorry Guy but most people up here call a 1980's car a "Winter Beater". Its sad but true.

It is, and they are all hitting classic antique status at 25 years!! Nobody respects cars anymore. In Los Angeles, if we treated all the 80s cars like that, they'd be gone forever. We do not have as many surviving 80s cars here as you do Will because of the government regulations and the people they destroy the cars at the drop of a dollar bill. Most of the 80s cars here left belong to Mexicans.

We have many car's but it seems over the past 4-5 month's the 80's in this area are giving way to mid to late 90's blob's. Many dealer's around here namely the Hyundai dealer are offering a $5000 credit on the trade in of a 1989 or older vehicle, its not even a government mandated program, it's just the Korean's trying to move their newest selection of garbage, it's really pissing me off!

If they trade in old Cavaliers or Escorts,it wouldnt hurt my feelings.
That is,if there are any still left running currently....

When was the last time you saw a Cavalier Z24?
An Escort GT?
An Escort EXP?
A Cavalier Type 10?
Remember, with the K cars we are talking the 81-89 era.
So,for the competition,thats Skylark/Omega/Phoenix/Citation/Celebrity/6000/Century/Ciera/Cavalier/J2000/Skyhawk/
Firenza/Cimmaron/Chevette/T1000/Escort/Lynx/EXP/LN7/Tempo/Topaz/Fairmont/Zephyr/
Spirit/Concord/Alliance/Encore.
Since when have you seen many of those?
Its proof the K cars werent that bad if they lasted nearly 30 years, outlasting most everything else.
Take that Toyota Corolla! Mazda 626! Honda Prelude! Audi 4000! VW Dasher!
Match it.....if you can!!

And for crying out loud! I am so pissed off at the overwhelming negative attitude towards owning anything American from the 80s. They may not have been always reliable, they may not have been fast, but they had 5mph bumpers! They were easier to work on! They could be made very reliable in the right hands! In California, only 1% of the K-cars I tagged actually joined the club. There is some improvement. 5 years ago, most 80s car ads said "beater", or what not. At least now half of them say "could be a classic" or qualify for "antique status". In another 5 years, hopefully they will begin being thought of as a 70s car that needs to be protected. I don't care how small we are, we recognize that wasting good used cars is stupid. And the K-car is stylish. (My humble opinianoted opinion) I wish I was not the only person at the office driving an American 80s car, but at least my presence says something about being frugal and resourceful. I will be driving my car at my next job, even if they scorn and say buy a Hyundai. Once I make more money, I will have no worries about keeping this car for another 20 years.

Oh by the way 88AriesWagon, in California its total opposite. We have tons more 80s GM products then K-cars. K-cars are the minority here. At first I was surprised to find 82-84 J bodies, but now I am a little disgusted to be seeing WAY more 80s J bodies and X bodies than Ks. Buick Skylarks are not very hard to find here. And Ford Tempos, give me a break. They say Tempos were very bad, but I see 84-87 models a couple times every week! Meanwhile, the K-cars have been dramatically reduced 50% since 2004. 4 OF THEM end up in a pick a part every freaken two weeks! Pisses me off. Almost no X bodies end up in Pick-a-part. Ks have all but disappeared here in the San Fernando Valley, except for poor areas of LA. Citations, not too hard to find here at all. A lot of the Skylarks are in amazing solid condition and they seem to get in a lot of accidents over here. I know of 3 of them that had 25mph collisions and are still being driven a year later. Must be the bad X body brakes. There was a crazy accident here a year ago where an 83 Buick Skylark crashed into an 80s Ford LTD at 30mph. The LTD was shorten 3 feet. The Skylark suffered only a bent in bumper (solid 5mph bumper). A year later, I noticed the owner finally bent it back into position. A little coupe. The 80 Skylark near my house is still running after totalling the front end at 25 6 months later and another brown Skylark just surfaced a few blocks away. Skylarks are the easiest X bodies to find here and are very tough. Whats this about X bodies being unrealiable? They are solid tank boxes and I would chose them as my 2nd favorite car next to the K. I love the Omegas even more (uh oh, I know I am a Mopar, but I can say what I want as president) Most forums won't tolerate people liking other cars. Don't get me wrong, I still love Ks the most, but they should have given them metallic bumper covers like the X bodies. Thats one thing I would change. Oh, I forgot, we have an Oldsmobile Omega at school from 1984 that has been hit at 25 TWICE! and is still being driven by a faculty. She gets laughed at for having the audacity to drive a 25 year old GM product in a school where 80s cars are almost nonexistent here in the parking lots now in 2009. And another Skylark just surfaced in the school............

and excuse my ranting. I will be quiet.

I would find it very amusing if a number of Chrysler plant employees (are there any left?) instead of showing up to the job with current Chrysler products (Caliber,Minivan,RAM...etc) would be brought there by K cars,Omnis, rear drivers (5th avenue/Diplomat) just to prove a point.
I wonder if there is a contingent of them somewhere doing that?

I have no problem owning an American car.
Frankly though, its not because its American, its because what it IS.
I know these cars.I cut my teeth on them.I feel comfortable working with them.
It reminds me of the old days.
And they are very simple and easy to work with.
Would I want a Caliber over a K-wagon?
Well, they are not even in the same league.
One is a government mandated rolling laptop computer,
the other is a proven perfomer, and durable appliance.
I'll take the "cheap" way out,and stick with the old car.

I don't think there enough K-cars left anymore for them to use. A few years ago, I totally stopped seeing K-cars as student cars in Southern California. We are totally running out of them. You easterners will have to keep up the advertising for me once I can't find them anymore within in the next year or two. It makes me laugh. You easterners are so much more resourceful and frugal with your 80s classics then us Cali people. I'd love for you guys to post vids about rust repair and the stuff you guys do to keep them rollin.
