JUST BOUGHT 1986 RELIANT SEDAN

Postby DDAYMEN » Thu Apr 10, 2008 2:36 am

I JUST BOUGHT A 1986 PLYMOUTH RELIANT SEDAN, THAT HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR 1 YEAR. I AM REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP AND THE FUEL LINES, AS WELL AS HAVING THE FUEL TANK STEAMED. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE ARE ANY LITTLE QUIRKS OR OTHER "THINGS" THAT SHOULD BE KNOWN ABOUT THIS CAR!

THANKS,

well for one thing check all the fluids these cars have aluminum heads and can overheat if the headgasket goes.

what part of the u.s do you live in?

do you have the 2.2 or the 2.5 TBI

Huh? The headgasket and water pump are the most critical elements of the K car. Overlook these and you can kiss your K car goodbye. Bye Bye engine. Often times, the headgasket goes with some warning as you have a temperature gauge. That is what happened to me when my needle almost met the H after the headgasket went. Fortunately, I did not have to drive my car far and was able to keep an eye on the needle.

i know those are the main keys to keep a k-car running, but in a warm climate headgeaskets dont tend to go as fast as in the midwest. i dont drive mine in the winter so that #1 i can help keep the k-car on the road #2 headgaskets dont bother.

AS
FAR AS KEEPING AN EYE ON THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE, IT DOES NOT WORK, ALSO THERE IS ANOTHER WIRE/PLUG THAT LOOKS LIKE THE ONE GOING TO THE TEMP. GAUGE, BUT IT NOT PLUGGED IN TO ANYTHING, AND I CAN'T FIND ANYWHERE IT WOULD GO (I USED AN EXTERNAL, -50 TO +500 DEGREE INFARED TEMP. MEASURING DEVICE, AND THE ENGINE RUNS AT 160-180 DEGREES).
ALSO, THE LEFT OUTSIDE CV JOINT HAS NO BOOT, AND I THINK I WILL JUST REPLACE THE WHOLE SHAFT, JOINT AND ALL.
ANY GOOD SUGGESTIONS OR TIPS?
