Headliner adhesive

Postby Veronica » Fri Jul 30, 2010 8:57 pm

Cant be the first to need to redo headliner.

Have new material.

Sprayed a whole large can of Super77 adhesive on the fiberglas board that the headliner is supposed to stick to. The fiberboard sucked up all of the adhesive, but didnt leave any for the headliner. What next? Contact Cement?
What is best to use for adhering new material to the fiber board when the original headliner is done for?

Have a big roll of black cotton. (The type that they make medium weight T-Shirts and Polos out of). Thinking about Vinyl which I would have to go to a fabric store and purchase. Hmm....perhaps a pretty Hawaiian floral pattern? (giggles) ;P

Thought about looking for an online answer. Allpar had a pile of horror stories: http://www.allpar.com/eek/headliner.html

And then one really sensible idea:
Smooth23: “Took it out of my car, ripped all the material off, and scraped and sanded it. Then I took some black semi-gloss and painted it. Looks great now.” (Thanks, “swalve”)

PAINT, (hmm) I LIKE that idea!

I did a headliner in an M body a couple years ago. You can purchase actual headliner material from fabric stores. They also have an excellent "white" glue that if you use springly, will work great. I wasn't super patient so I had a couple spots where it seeped through, but not bad.

The wagon is the toughest to do. I ended up having my local shop do mine for $175. Usually, if you have already pulled the healiner out, you can take the shell to a Mom and Pop place and they will do the liner to the shell pretty cheap. The largest cost is the labor taking it out and putting it in.

Hawaiian Floral..............

I looked at that link you posted and the first 3/4ths of the page had great instruction and ideas and the proper types of adhesive to use.

Also at the bottom of said page, there is a link, that will take you to another page and show you step by step photos.

Seems the BIG problem after getting everything all loosened up and trim out is getting the headliner "board" out of the car!!

I've done 3, my old Aries Wagon, my Rampage and my Caravan. What I do is fold the material in half and drape it over the board. Spray the cloth and the board. Allow to dry. Slowly fold the material onto the board, be careful as once it's down there's no going back. Once you've completed the first half fold the remaining fabric over the side you've already done and repeat.

Thank you all for your help.

Guess that Jack likes my design ideas? :)
If I lived in Tenn, I would probably want something in a Country French.
Anyone ever try Satin with Lace trim?
(giggles) I am way too much fun for this group! :D

I re-did the interior in my 59 El Camino in leopard print back in the 80s. :P
