Gulp, gulp,gulp!

Postby ARTTY » Mon Mar 25, 2013 7:15 pm

Calling all K-CARS, calling all K-CARS. After some calculation, I've discovered that "Poor Kay" is getting between 16 and 17 MPG, city. On the freeway she gets about 22 to 24 MPG. Is this "normal"? Someone please help, 'cause she drinks like a pirate! Thanks! ARTTY

Hi,

The best advice I can give you on the multiple issues you have listed here about your car is- you really need a factory shop manual ! I think your're going to need to get the speed sensor issue and cooling fan control issue squared away and then look at getting the car tuned up with new plugs, air filter and possibly plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. a poorly tuned car with engine control management issues is likely to burn a lot of fuel. i would not just put in a toggle switch to control the fan without knowing what the engine controller will do. You really need the shop manual to understand how the car was meant to operate. You can usually find the manuals listed on Ebay.

Hi,

Some other thoughts on fuel milage. Your numbers are a little low but not too terrible. Some things to remember- 1.It depends on how you drive the car with a heavy or light foot on the pedal, 2. These cars were designed for the then current 55 MPH national speed limit , they are geared to run there. 65 -70MPH burns more fuel. 3. These cars were no designed to run on 10% alcohol blends and using it lowers milage. As suggested above a good tune up and fixing some of the cars issues will help.

My mileage gets as low as 21mpg on city streets, and I find my mileage increases a bit under 70. I typically keep my car between 65-70 the whole way.

On my long trips up to Sacramento, going 65-70 the whole way, sometimes occasionally going over 70 on certain grades, I am
consistently getting 24-26 mpg with the crappy 10% ethanol gas that Arnie baby forced us to use. This as an 800 mile round trip on
my high mileage K-Car. How accurate is your gas guage?
