RARE 1979 PLYMOUTH HORIZON

Postby classicfan1 » Sun Nov 17, 2013 1:54 am

Not quite a K-Car, but its of the era and vintage. These early cars are VERY RARE. Does anybody care to save it? I don't have a spot for it.

I would save it if I had the money. They are extinct in California now, except for the one in Santa Monica I saw two years ago. 8-)

An early Plymouth Horizon was actually the car that the Henry Ford Museum had the most difficulty trying to find. If they have toruble finding one, you know they're rare. I think many of our K-Cars and K-derivatives will be very rare indeed and the reason is that the originalc lassic cars from the 60s and earlier were literally put out in junkyards. They sat for many years, sometimes decades, and unless they owned a crane or a bulldozer, not much car crushing went on. By the time our K-Cars were built, that way of doing business was on the decline. These older yeards sucumbed to new EPA regulations, HOA's that built neighborhoods nearby and compained, lawsuits, etc. Since the 1980s, auto salvage changed completely. Most yards now keep a car for a couple years at msot, typically only a matter of months. then the car, no matter how complete or how old, is crushed for scrap. Rust free bodies, all that trim GONE.

Its also more difficult to buy junkyard cars now. It used to be some kid in the 60's or 70's could buy a beat up '57 Chevy or '58 Plymouth and just get it titled and fix it up. Not now. Now many yards are required to send in the titles and its a mess to get it back. thats why these haven't survivd, they all got crushed before anybody felt nostalgic about them.

The most horrid example is the murder of the long-lost Shelby Street Fighter Rampage prototype truck. It broke my heart on the outcome. After 15 years of disappearing, it showed up in a California salvage yard just over a year ago. A modern one, too. If it wasn't for Jalopnik, it would have killed in the crusher and no one would have known. The one-off wheels, the aluminum nose, all gone. All that history, a car that Carrol Shelby built with his own two hands, destroyed at the hands of modern auto salvage and EPA laws.

Wow, that's a GREAT FIND! Right now I need a winning lotto ticket 'cause I've got about 5 other SUPER rare cars that have surfaced and I want them all (and the $ to store them... I"m going broke with that now).

My dad had 5 different "Horomni's" (as we used to call them since he owned both Horizon's and Omni's). Man with $1500.00 I'd have my brother out there this weekend.

This is because California CARB is a corrupt organization. And, it was only because the yard I went to was owned by a nice Mexican-American that I was able to save that convertible.

Trying to find a 1982 Chrysler LeBaron 4dr Sedan is just as hard, if not impossible. We lost the last one in California three years ago.
