that is only partly correct.

1988 2.2 T1 and 1989+ 2.5 T1 engines were the only setup to get the small mitsubishi turbocharger

2.2 T1 engine before 1988, 2.2 T2, T3 16v (R/T cars), 2.2 T4 VNT, and 2.5 T2 (Mexico only) all came with various Garret turbos.

the VNT (variable nozzle turbo) was a complicated system aimed at combining the quicker spool of the small mitsu with the better flow of the garret.

mopar was fixated on turbo lag when it went to that puny turbo on the non-intercooled cars. but in truth, that big 2.5 with all it's extra low end torque is perfectly content with a garret, especially when you add an intercooler and a big exhaust. the mitsu is so tiny that if you go with a bigger exhaust than 2-1/2 dia. pipe you will over boost the turbo.

Gary Donovan sums it up pretty good on his website thedodgegarage.com:

For performance use I cannot recommend a stock Mitsubishi turbo AT ALL! It has a much smaller compressor, the shaft bearings are a third the size of a Garretts and the exhaust housing is a major restriction! The backpressure at high boost levels must be obscene!

-that's why my 86 Aries wagon will be sporting a 2.5 T2 with a full 3" exhaust including custom swing valve.

The Neon SRT-4 used a much newer design and BIGGER Mitsubishi brand turbo but it is not exactly compatible with our engines (the R/T cars were the only one's with universal pattern mounting flanges).

so only go this route if you already have a mitsu equipped car and don't want to stay original rather than do yourself a favor and get the Garret off a T2 car.

CORRECTION JUSTIN!

Dan is not a spammer. I just looked up his credentials online. He is a Mistubishi dealer specialist in Illinois. I know you hate the 2.6, but lets give this guy our thanks for thinking of us, even
if he is unaware most of our cars have Chrysler motors. We need more people like Dan willing to help us keep this hobby alive. 8-)

Wow! They did. Please explain. I thought all turbo Ks were Chrysler turbos.
