Car stalls when turnimg in a left circle

Postby roydds » Thu Mar 29, 2012 11:34 am

My 1985 Lebaron stalls completely when turning in a left circle..It only happens when the gas tank in half full or less..Also all the time it will sputter and attempt to stall when I "floor it". The lost power light comes on.

Hi,
I'm not sure if your car has a carburetor or a fuel injection set up. 85 was a transition year and I'm not sure about LeBarons. So, it would help to know what engine we are talking about and the fuel delivery system. If it is Carbureted it could be the float and it's adjustment. They are closed cell foam floats that get saturated with gas as they age and sink lower and lower to you have that kind of problem. It could also be an issue with the fuel tank gas pick up, a very dirty tank or some kind of issue with the in tank fuel pump if it a fuel injection car.

The car is fuel injected 2.2 L turbo I bought it and it was in bad shape. It had been sitting in a garage for 12-15 years. After reading your response i bet the gas tank has crud in it..Is there a place to buy a new/used gas tank ? I took it to the mechanic and he was perplexed by the left turn stall symptom ( does not happen when gas tank is full )..He found oil leaking from the turbo, could that cause these symptoms ?
( I willdo a new post about the turbo leaking oil ) Thanks for your help

Hi,

If the car sat for 12 to 15 years with gas in the tank that is not good! The tank is now very likely to have rust, varnish, water and all kinds of crud in it. If you just added so fresh gas and drove it, likely all that crud has broken loose and may be clogging up the fuel pick up. Any car that has sat for long periods like that you should drain the tank and drop it out for a good cleaning and inspection. So, at this point I would drain and drop the tank and find a local radiator shop that can dip the tank in their hot tank cleaner. To do this you'll have to remove the in tank electric fuel pump which may be a whole other issue in itself if it is now kind of rusted in. There is a filter screen on the pump pick up that is likely dirty and will need to be cleaned. You should at this point, climb under the car and see what kind of shape the gas tank is in. If it is badly rusted you may be better off replacing it. You may or may not be able to transfer the fuel pump, if badly rusted you may loose it trying to get it out. Also, inspect the straps that hold the tank under the car. If they are all rusted as well they should be replaced. Much of this is going to depend on how many miles are on the car and how it was stored for those 12 years. I would not put a 150K mile fuel pump back in even if it did come out in one piece. All these issues can be resolved with new parts if needed but it's going to be a little pricey.

I saw your posting on the turbo oil leak. As 88Aries said you need to get that squared away and get new seals in that turbo. i don't know a lot about those turbo's but all turbo's need a good supply of oil on their bearings or it's good bye turbo.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

I agree with "Pete in NH" that there is a good chance the filter screen on the fuel pickup is partially clogged, and I would also replace the pump if I pulled it out and thought that it was an original pump. I think new replacement aftermarket fuel tanks are available if you need to replace the tank, but I suspect the quality is not as good as original Mopar.

As for the Turbo oil leak, I suggest posting your question identifying where the oil is leaking, and the best course of action to take assuming the Turbo does need new seals (rebuilt it yourself, send it to a specialist to get it rebuilt or obtain a new/rebuilt unit) - on the Turbo Mopar Forum (see link below).

I think the turbo replacement is not an easy and may require cylinder head removal for easy access.

We were removing turbo with the head on it can be done, but that being said you may be better off pulling it as one unit as the head gasket is probability shot.
