1982 400 Electrical draw on battery when car is off

Postby Schoolteacherjim » Thu Nov 20, 2014 12:40 pm

Hello, I have a 1982 Dodge 400 convertible. When the car is turned off the battery goes dead. If I disconnect the battery it will maintain a charge for days so the battery is good. I put a tester on the battery with the cables connected and the battery dropped .15 volts in 20 minutes. This is obviously a problem that the previous owner had as the car has a quick disconnect installed on the battery. Any suggestions on a possible cause would be appreciated. Thanks, schoolteacherjim

It could be a number of things staying on..I would look for inside lights etc first...Also if it have a bad voltage regulator it will run it down also...

Here is an old school test that won,t work well on new cars. (too many memory wires ) If you remove the negative cable off the batterie and install a 12 volt test light between the cable and the batterie post it will light up if there is a draw and go out when the draw is gone. Then you can unplug electrical components or pull fuses to mabey find which circut it is on. Your raido likely will have a memory wire which will dimly light the light, that is if your raido remembers the time and has electronic pre sets.
