1988 Dodge Aries wagon stalling under load

Postby sk88er44 » Sun May 01, 2016 4:55 pm

Hey guys!

I just picked up an excellent condition 1988 Dodge Aries Wagon 2.5L from the original owner. Only 86,000km!

It runs great when parked, can rev up freely. However when I put it into gear (auto transmission), it will bog when I give it gas. I can very slowly drive it down the street if I feather the gas pedal, but under any normal acceleration it will bog out on me.

I have replaced:
Spark plugs, wires, cap, distributor, rotor, coil, MAP sensor, air filter. Fuel filter looks new, but I bought a new one just in case, will go on there today.

I also noticed that when I pulled the old spark plugs out, they were very white and lean looking.

Any suggestions? I'm really excited to get this car on the road!

I have a different engine (Mitsubishi 2.6) but the same problem after I started driving it. Fixing a bad EGR valve made a world of difference, and a couple of cans of Sea-Foam in the tank to clean out the fuel system fixed all my driveabilty problems with the engine.

There are a lot of possible causes. Check for any stored fault codes for starters. (See link for code reading procedure.)

Some potential causes: bad speed sensor, bad EGR valve, bad idle speed motor, clogged cat., bad oxygen sensor, dirty throttle body, bad map sensor, dirty fuel, injector, low fuel pump pressure, etc.

Here are some suggestions from the Allpar site.
