1986 New Yorker turbo project

Postby jase386 » Mon Jan 23, 2012 8:40 pm

My friend has always been a k-car fan, having an 84 aries, that just runs and runs with rarely any trouble. but he longed for something nicer. he wanted a lincoln or cadillac but wanted to keep allegance to the k-car and we set out looking for a New Yorker. He is also a turbo fan, so the turbo new yorker was the perfect fit. I am a Lincoln fan, but he likes the size and looks of the k-car new Yorkers and of course the turbo.

We found an 86 model about 2 hours from our home town and drove to look at it. the paint is a little faded, but what 80s car in burgandy didnt fade? the interior is just like the day it left the show room. The car, we found out, has its original 15,800 miles, and has been sitting in a carport since 1988.

She wouldnt run because of no fuel delivery, so we trailered it home thru the mountains and set to work. new fuel tank, pump and sending unit later, she fires up but runs rough. can be expected after 23 years of sitting. Found that only 2 cylinders were firing, and traced that back to the harness not being pluged into the power module tightly enough. Great, we say, shes alive. but she doesnt charge the battery. thats what has led us to this forum, and also to meet other people who are nuts for these crazy little cars. Hoping to find a great family here and be able to share our lessons as well as learn from others.

Welcome! And congratulations. It sounds like a straight forward restore. I gather the interior is burgundy also. Is it velvet or leather. Very comfortable either way.
Send pictures of your progress. Good luck.

Power module is next to the batt and retains the voltage reg. They have been known to go bad. If thats the case, you can wire in an electronic reg. from a 70's car. It's by far a cheaper way to fix the problem. http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/conte ... -Regulator

Sounds like a great find. Hope to see some pics. I 2nd what Butch said about the voltage reg. Although you can find those control modules fairly cheap now. There is not too much demand for them anymore. Those Turbo NYers were sweet rides, comfortable & fast.
