A/c Belt - Alternator

Postby 2scots » Sun May 22, 2011 8:59 pm

Hello, a few questions for the more informed. Our 85 600ES had the A/C converted some time ago before we bought it. Recently our Mechaniker had to put in a new alternator as ours had gone bad. He also performed a tune-up, changed the plugs and wires (he used an AC Delco alternator and plug wires because he said Mopar was no longer making ours). The A/C blows cold but we have a loose belt now that whines at times. Is Mopar still manufacturing parts for the 2.2 Turbo 1?
In addition, are there any mechanics that are recommended here in the Atlanta Area? :?

Not sure, but probably not. I had heard indirectly through a former dealer that the "new Fiat/Chrysler" has stopped producing parts for many cars older than 15 years, even concerning some common replacement items for which there is a current demand by dealers. Some things may be still available through Mopar that are still in stock in warehouses until the current stock is depleted.

You should try posting your question on the Turbo Mopar forum and/or Turbo Dodge forum. There is a much larger pool of informed people who will read your question and respond. In addition you can probably find 2.2 Turbo 1 parts new and used through those sites.

If the belt is loose tighten it to whatever specification is called for in the service manual and see if the whine goes away. If your belt is loose and you run it for a long time with the whine it will become glazed and need to be replaced. If the belt is not loose or a glazed belt is not causing the whine, it could also be a bad A/C compressor bearing or a bad pulley bearing. Sometimes you can also test if the belt is making the noise by putting a little water on the belt and see if the whine goes away for a short time. Could also be lack of proper amount of oil in the A/C system.

Most mechanics typically install rebuilt aftermarket alternator units rather than new units because cost. You can also still get your original alternator rebuilt by a local alternator/starter repair shop if you want the exact unit that came on your car. Or the shop probably has an exact match rebuilt unit sitting on its shelf in stock.

A/C Belt - Alternator

Postby 2scots » Mon May 23, 2011 4:17 pm

Our mechanic said the Alternator is a NOS/NIB? (New Old Stock) and not a rebuilt one. He is not a fan of the parts coming out of China now days. Anyway, the car is back at the garage and perhaps we will end up needing a new compressor although it is blowing cold. Does anyone have a recommendation on A/C Compressors? :?
Evidentally the compressor that was installed was a rebuilt one. :x

Actually, there are a lot of do-it-yourself 2.2 and 2.5 mechanics on this board. 88Aries knows a lot, as well as does MyDodgeDip. We are slowly building our resources
here under the 2.2 section as well as with our friends at TurboMopar and the other sites KWagon mentioned.
