2.2l head gasket swap recomendations

Postby 1987dodgearies » Mon Jul 28, 2014 11:51 pm

I'm planning to swap head gaskets on my 87 Aries with almost 35,000 miles on it. I over heated my 2.2L last fall and want to replace the head gasket. I read a few posts online about using a MOPAR Performance head gasket instead of a FELPRO or other good name brand gasket.

I did see the 11mm head bolts are torque-to-yield so they cant be reused after removing them.

I read that you should try to find a MOPAR # P4452005 - non-crossdrilled head and block or you can use a # P4452006 - crossdrilled head and block

FELPRO supposedly made a good gasket but you need to find a Print-O-Seal gasket instead of a Permatorque. Hmmmm...lots of strong opinions from what I have read. However most these were generally on cars that were using turbos I think. My cars just a daily driver.

Has anyone here had experience replacing a 2.2l head gasket at home?

As far as I know the Mopar 4452005 and 4452006 are no longer available from Chrysler. Using a turbo rated gasket on a non turbo engine works nicely because if the gasket can deal with the turbo pressures, will have some extra margin on a non turbo engine.

You might be able to find some Mopar gaskets out there on a shelf some where, but they are widely looked for items.

Thank you for the reply.

They are pretty hard to locate, like you said. I came across some complete MOPAR sets over on @bay. Not sure that would be the best price, but I found some complete head gasket swap sets Manufacturer Part Number: S3-05416-00296 for about $132 and another for $172.00 ..ouch!!

Using a turbo rated gasket on a non turbo engine makes sense like you said. Its just a shame there is no good way to address the 2.2l head gaskets issues with getting squished and being so prone to leaking. It just seems everything I have read (with a few exceptions) says stay away from FELPRO, on a 2.2 head gasket replacement.
