Axle seal replacement??

Postby grannys84reliant » Sat Jul 06, 2013 4:39 pm

Good morning everyone;
My daughter's 84 Reliant (2.2L, Carb.) has had a trans leak since we purchased it. I have noticed that it seems to leak more when on a slight incline...as in - on the DRIVEWAY!
It seems better when on a flat surface...as in OUT in The STREET ! Figures that it would leak more, in the area that I care about! :D
Anyway, I got under the car the other day (it was up on ramps - the slope of the ramps made it very easy to find the leak), I noticed that the axle seals into the trans-axle must be shot. Trans fluid was pretty much pouring out on both the passenger and driver's side.
I guess the main question here is this: Has anyone had the pleasure of replacing these seals and if so, how complicated and time consuming is this job. If at all possible, I'd prefer to do this myself, then to pay a shop.
Thanks to anyone with input here!

Jim

I wish there were some comments on this old thread, I now have the very same issue. I have a bad leak out of the drivers side axle shaft on my 87 Aries with 2.2l engine.

When I park it, theres a steady stream of transmission fluid running down. I went under the car today and sprayed things clean with brake parts cleaner... then ran the car, in gear (while the front end was safely supported).

The steady stream of fluid was coming out of the axle half shaft. I put the car back in park and shut it off....about a fluid once leaked before it tuned to just a drip again on.

Has anyone here replaced an axle seal on a K cars? It shouldn't be too complicated but the Haynes manual is useless.

Here are some links to some info on turbo dodge that you might find useful.

This link also has some useful information, but I think your car has unequal length shafts and the procedure may be slightly different.

Thanks for the links to the threads. I was hoping to start taking it apart today but the cars outside and the snows coming down pretty heavy. I'm hoping its just a matter of a fresh axle seal.
I only have 42,000 miles on the car, so I'm hoping the axle shaft isn't chewed up or the bearings themselves are already shot. I can purchase an axle repair sleeve for about $20 from Rockauto if need be... but I guess I first need to get it apart and see whats going on.
