86 600 Coupe info please

Postby TurboK » Tue Aug 25, 2009 4:34 am

I have an 86 600 ES Turbo, and know all about it, but I am getting an 86 600 SE Coupe from a friend, and would like to know the production numbers on them. If they are a dime a dozen, I would not feel bad about turning it into an ES Turbo clone. However, if they are relatively rare, as I suspect, I will do a restoration on it. Thanks for the help.

Glad to see you here. Here are the production numbers:

11,714 1986 Dodge 600 Coupes were produced

11,714 x. 90% estimated scrappage=Rougly 1,000 or less left in the United States.

Yeah, you got a pretty rare car, but not as rare as mine.

1989 Dodge Aries LE Coupe. 3,200 made. Roughly 300 left.

These are my guesstimates.

Oh, I forgot:

1986 Dodge 600ES Convertible: 4,759.

Probably 400-700 left.

Just wondering... how exactly did you get 90% scrappage rate on the coupe?

And by the way, there have to be a ton more ES Turbos than that left. You have to consider the fact the the convertibles were saved more, the coupes and sedans are much more rare. Assuming scrappage of coupes is 90 percent (though that's not a hard fact either), convertbiles are probably more like 30 or 40 percent scrapped... expecially ES Turbo models. There's defintiely at least a couple thousand out there.

I read somewhere that there are about 900 Dodge 400 convertibles still in existence, and 600 ES models are much more common than those, so that's another good reason why there has to be more than the number you quoted. But yes, the coupe versions are definitely quite rare, much more so than the babied convertibles.

90% estimated scrapage isn't that far fetched for a 23 yr old car that isn't considered a collectors item. Just because a car( or anything else for that matter ) is rare due the scrapage or low production doesn't always make it a collectors item either.

For instance a Yugo GV Cabriolet, limited production, lots of scrappage, not a collector. Drove one a few weeks ago, felt like driving a piece of licorice down a piece of peanut brittle. The body had so much flex, and it was so underpowered it was almost dangerous.

Yugo story! I actually had one of the 89 1990 Yugo Cabrio convertibles that were made, white with a blue top and interior. Interesting car, but unfortunately deserving of it's reputation. I got it from a kid who was so far in the bucket over it's payments ( it listed for twice as much as the coupe), his Mom paid it off and I got it cheap. Mine only had 13,000 original miles, but already the driver's window regulator was broken, it's little trunk lid that slid straight up like the VW Rabbit convert did wouldn't stay up, and the gear shift felt like I was stirring pudding when ever I shifted. One thing I do remember was the top. Absolutely top quality material and construction, seriously!. Who ever did that part got it right. really had the hopes of doing a full on restoration, but it was falling apart so fast I had second thoughts. That and the realization I would be laughed out of any car show I went to caused me to sell it.

Well if an 89 ES coupe is rare, then how rare is my 88 Aries coupe 5 speed ? It's the only manual shift K that I've ever driven. And I drove several of them in 88 89 most of which belonged to either Alamo or Budget Car Rental.South Florida {where I lived at the time} was covered up with K cars and LeBaron ragtops with rental company stickers on them.Ah,the good old days...
I just love boxy coupes.Used to have a 90 Jetta coupe.Had a Volvo 242 GT for a short time and two Fairmont Futuras.Love them Fairmonts!Hope I never own another water cooled VW.Hell,my first car was a 76 Audi Fox.I've been an oddball ever since.
