Folks,

I am very happy to report the progress Raymundo Marquez of Brawley, California has made on the 1983 Plymouth Reliant Wagon he bought and saved for our club. It belonged to an older gentleman in Altadena and it was in danger of being crushed. He has been fantastic in keeping us involved and is building a support system for our club to help keep the K-car alive. His son is a mechanic and they are an outpost for saving old cars, and for an affordable price. They want to build a resource for us so we don't have to pay an arm and a leg to keep our cars alive. If I need something really bad, I will make the trip to the border. So without much adieu, here are the progess photos
of the K-wagon

83 RELIANT PROJECT, YEEHAW!!!!!!

Here is information on the 1983 Plymouth Reliant Wagon restoration project. Raymundo, I am not a mechanic, and I may need you to help us understand what was wrong with the car and what you did to fix it. According to an email Raymundo sent me, there was a massive oil leak that weakened C arm in the suspension, so they had to fix the oil leak, and repair the suspension with new struts and bushings. When I found the car a year ago, it appeared to have sat most of the last four years, and it was very difficult to get charged up and running. When we finally got it running, the owner and I drove it around the block. The transmission clunked really bad and appeared to be slipping.

Well, Raymundo's son, a K-car mechanic specialist, decided the whole engine and transmission needed to come out, so the engine could be serviced and the transmission rebuilt. When they took the engine out, they discovered part of the overheating problem was rust in the water seals in block and head. Perhaps Hemi Anderson can comment what would cause this, why this happened, and was there anything that could be done to avoid a teardown. Raymundo also says the head seal was burned, which was why the car was loosing oil. I don't understand this part. He also said all other engine seals were replaced due to deterioration, basic lack of use. The transmission apparently had ruined rings, and he said it was a miracle the car could still run. So, they pulled everything out of the bay and redid the engine and transmission, even painting the tranny blue.

Oh, if anyone is interested, Raymundo and his son salvaged a transmission, and they say they can rebuild it and put it in your car for around $600 or so, if any of you need a transmission. They also have friends on the other side of the border, with parts and resources also. Do not be afraid to drive to Brawley.
