My original 24 year old muffler does have a sustantial leak. Too bad as I rather like the pentastar on it. Does it really affect engine performance and smog?

The muffler does not affect smog - it is there for noise reduction. May have a very minor effect on engine performance since you are changing (reducing) the intended backpressure with the hole. In general, the engine will probably run better from a performace standpoint with no muffler since there is less backpressure. If its bad it should be replaced so that the exhaust gases get directed out the back of the car.
